HIGH-VOLTAGE ELECTRIC VEHICLE SAFETY
TRAINING COURSE
WTA’s High Voltage Vehicle Safety Training Course prepares fleet technicians to safely service and support light-, medium-, and heavy-duty electric vehicles. This course teaches technicians essential safety knowledge and controlled procedures required to work around high voltage systems found in battery-electric, hybrid-electric, and fuel-cell electric platforms.
Technicians begin by learning to identify the major components and architecture of EV high voltage systems, including batteries, inverters, DC/DC converters, electric drive units, contactors, and high voltage cabling. They develop a clear understanding of how these systems operate, where high-risk energy points exist, and how system failures can affect technician safety and vehicle behavior.
A major focus of the course is risk mitigation. Technicians learn the potential hazards associated with high voltage propulsion systems, how to recognize unsafe conditions, and how to apply proper lockout and verification procedures before beginning any service work. Instruction includes a detailed review of required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), proper inspection of insulating tools, and best practices for maintaining a safe work environment.
Hands-on training reinforces how to “safe down” an electric vehicle using approved OEM and industry procedures. This includes performing Live-Dead-Live verification testing, validating the absence of voltage, and confirming that the vehicle is in a safe state for maintenance. Technicians also receive guidance on selecting appropriate Digital Multimeters (DMMs), understanding meter category ratings, and using measurement tools that meet the demands of EV high voltage applications.
When the course is completed, technicians have the confidence and competence to work safely around high voltage systems in the electric vehicles within their fleets. This training lays the foundation for more advanced EV diagnostics, battery service, and high voltage system repair within WTA’s comprehensive curriculum.
